One of my favorite movies is “What About Bob,” in which Bill Murray plays a man who is extremely (and comically) afflicted with Obsessive Compulsive Disorder.  Bob is afraid of leaving his apartment, he’s afraid of germs, he’s afraid of illnesses and heart attacks, the list goes on and on.

Bob begins to see a psychologist named Leo Marvin (played to perfection by Richard Dreyfuss) and they work on “Baby Steps,” which is a process of making small, manageable goals.  The results are hilarious, but the principle is actually pretty sound.

Baby steps work because a little bit of forward motion is better than standing still!  The thing that most often keeps us from achieving our goals is being intimidated by the whole picture.  But if we focus on the first step, we find that the next step seems a lot more manageable.

So take a moment and dream.  What do you want to accomplish?  What have you been too intimidated to try?  Now write out the first small step you could take toward that goal.

Does it seem more manageable that way?  Great!  Now go for it!
